Walker Murdoch Law provides legal aid for family law clients who meet the eligibility criteria.
To apply, please complete the application form under the “legal aid” banner above. In order to process your application, we also require the following information to be provided to us:
Proof of income (myIRD, payslip, WINZ benefit, financial statements)
Proof of income of partner
If you have an interest in a trust, the Trust Deed and latest set of financial statements.

Your income (and your partners), assets and debts will be considered to determine whether you are eligible.
You cannot have more than $80,000 equity in your home or more than $5,000 disposable capital.
The below shows the maximum you can earn depending on how many dependents you have (as at July 2025).
No dependents / Single - $28,984
One dependent or Partner - $49,900
Two dependents / Partner and One Child - $66,005
Three dependents / Partner and Two Children - $75,006
Four dependents / Partner and Three Children - $83,816
Five dependents / Partner and Four Children - $93,696
6 or more add $8,192 per child.

Legal Aid Services will also look at your chances of winning your case. This test applies to cases in the Family Court about relationship property and maintenance.

You can be refused if Legal Aid Services considers that how much you will have to pay a lawyer will end up being more than you might get from winning your case.
